Note-taker Instructions

Instructions and procedures for note-takers

  • Your role is to take clear, concise notes for one or more students in the class receiving accommodations.

  • Notes must be typed or scanned, and uploaded to our folder on Rutgers.Box.Com within 24 hours of each class. (Note: if the class meets once a week for a double session, notes should be uploaded within 48 hours.) You will receive a confirmation from us with instructions for uploading notes to Rutgers.Box.Com.
  • Your uploads do not always begin on the same dates as confirmation email. Unless your confirmation email states otherwise, all notes dating back to the start of the semester must be uploaded to Rutgers Box, including those taken prior to receiving your confirmation email and invitation to the Box folder. (THIS IS IMPORTANT!)
  • Note-takers need only provide notes from lectures; not readings, recitations, labs, or workshops.
  • You may add your notes to the instructor's PowerPoint slides or other materials and upload those. BUT, you must be adding notes from the lecture, not just uploading a copy of the slides.
  • If there are no notes for a class, you must upload a document stating the reason for not taking any notes, ex. Exam, Guest Lecture, Class Cancelled, etc.
  • Notes must be uploaded as a .doc or .pdf. You may use your cellphone to take pictures of your notes, but they must be scanned to a PDF, not a JPEG or PNG. You can use an app, such as Cam Scanner or Box Capture, among other apps, to accomplish this.
  • Be sure to capture anything written on board by the professor, including due dates, assignment instructions, and exam information.
  • Avoid using abbreviations in your notes that may not be common; if necessary, add a legend.
  • If you are going to be absent, you are responsible for securing notes from another student or the professor and uploading them to Rutgers.Box.Com.
  • Your relationship with students receiving notes is confidential. You will probably not find out who they are, but if you do, do not share with anyone else that you are taking notes for a student. It is the student’s choice whether or not to disclose this to others.
  • More than one student may be receiving your notes.
  • If a student drops out of class and there are no other students receiving notes, your assignment will end and the stipend will be prorated. You will be notified by our office if this occurs.
  • If you drop out of a course for which you have been assigned as a note-taker or for any reason no longer wish to be a note-taker, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can work on finding another note-taker.

COMPENSATION

  • Compensation for a full semester of notes in an online or in-person class is $210.00. Payments are sent after the end of the semester.
  • Full payment is contingent upon notes being uploaded for every scheduled class meeting. Failure to do so may result in compensation being prorated. Assignments of less than a full semester in length will also be prorated.
  • Compensation in courses of less than 3 credits will be prorated.

If you have any questions at any time, please email the Note Taking Administrator at ods.notetake@echo.rutgers.edu.

Thank you for your service. The role you play is an important one for students receiving notes, and we appreciate your commitment.
