Accessible On-Campus Housing

Housing Disability Accommodation Request Form

Rutgers University Residence Life is committed to providing equal educational opportunity by supporting the full participation of all students in our campus community.  We promote the ideals of diversity and inclusion by accommodating the various needs of our students who stay with us on campus.  We do not discrimminate in any University programs or activities.  We prohibit the harrassment of our community members.

Rutgers University Residence Life provides reasonable accommodations for on-campus university housing to students with documented disabilities. Students requesting reasonable accommodations for on-campus university housing must complete the Housing Disability Request Form.  Also, you will be required to have your treating professional fill out the Housing Accommodation Documentation Form.  Applications are reviewed by the appropriate medical, psychological, and/or professional staff. When a request is processed, the student will be notified of its status, and if approved, will receive an appropriate housing assignment based on vacancies available in housing at that time.

Students who need special accommodations must inform Residence Life of the nature of their request.  Staff will not ask for more information than is needed to adequately review a request.  All disclosed information will be kept as confidential as possible.  Recognizing that students are not all alike, and have different needs and desires, Residence Life addresses each request on an individual, case-by-case basis.

Recommended Timeline for Submitting a Request

NEW RUTGERS UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

New students to Rutgers should submit the Housing Disability Request Form as soon as they apply for housing in early spring semester. Students should aim to have completed and submitted their forms by June 1st prior to the fall semester for which they require accommodations for on-campus university housing. All requests, including those received after June 1st, will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis as they are received.

CURRENTLY ENROLLED STUDENTS

Continuing students should submit the Housing Disability Request Form as soon as they know they require accommodations. Setting up an accommodation may require time. The early submission of this form will allow for faster processing of the request. Once an application is received, the student will be contacted to discuss their request before a decision is reached. Students will generally receive a response within 30 business days with one of the following application statuses:

  • Application Approved: when a student’s request for reasonable accommodations have been approved pending a vacancy. Students currently living in housing and requesting an immediate change, will be informed of a specific housing assignment, or of the anticipated wait time until such a vacancy may arise. Students requesting accommodations for the upcoming school year will be notified by the Office of Housing & Residence Life directly;

  • More Information Needed: when a student’s request for housing accommodations cannot be approved as more information is needed to substantiate the need for reasonable accommodations;

  • Application Not Approved: when a student’s request for housing accommodations as documented does not qualify him or her for special housing accommodations.
